Is Port Canaveral the Best Cruise Port for Orlando Residents?

For Orlando-area travelers, Port Canaveral changes the economics of cruising. A cruise is no longer automatically a flight, hotel, airport transfer, and luggage problem. It can be a drive-to vacation.

The biggest advantage is friction

The less travel you have to do before the vacation starts, the more attractive short cruises become. Three-, four-, and five-night sailings make much more sense when the port is close enough that you are not adding another travel day on each side.

The ship selection is now a major strength

Royal Caribbean currently markets Utopia of the Seas on three- and four-night getaways and Star of the Seas on seven-night itineraries from Port Canaveral, giving Central Florida travelers access to both quick weekends and major ship-focused vacations.

When Miami or Fort Lauderdale can still win

South Florida ports may offer a particular ship, itinerary, date, or fare you cannot get from Port Canaveral. A sufficiently better cruise can justify the longer drive or an overnight stay.

The Worth It rule

Do not compare cruise fares alone. Add gas or charging, tolls, parking, hotels, time off, and the value of your time. For Central Florida residents, Port Canaveral often wins before the ship even leaves the dock.
